President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to regional peace and cooperation while celebrating the 58th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Friday.
In his remarks, Marcos extended greetings to all ASEAN citizens and highlighted the Philippines’ historic role in the organization’s founding.
“We take pride in the Philippines’ role more than five decades ago when we laid the foundation for a region anchored on peace, cooperation, shared progress and prosperity,” Marcos said.
The President cited that through unity and dialogue, ASEAN has withstood global and regional challenges, forging partnerships that uplift communities across Southeast Asia.
He also recognized this year’s theme of “inclusivity and sustainability,” a reflection of the region’s aspirations in a rapidly changing world.
Looking ahead, Marcos confirmed the Philippines is ready to lead the regional bloc when it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026.
“We will uphold ASEAN principles and continue the region’s legacy of lasting peace and shared progress as we navigate our future together,” said the President.
ASEAN, founded on 8 August 1967, is composed of 10 member states —Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
