Jojo Mendrez is taking his music journey to the next level under ABS-CBN’s Star Music, one of the country’s most prominent labels.
Guided by Star Music’s creative director Jonathan Manalo and now managed by Rams David of Artist Circle, Mendrez is preparing to release an emotionally-charged album that blends beloved Original Pilipino Music (OPM) revivals and heartfelt original compositions.
“We’re excited about the new music Jojo will release,” said Manalo. “It will be a combination of well-loved OPM classics and original songs written especially for him. I’m even working on a Christmas song for him this year.”
Manalo credits David — whose management roster includes some of Star Music’s key artists — for bridging this new collaboration. “Rams has always been a trusted partner,” he said.
From businessman to balladeer
Mendrez made waves in the local music scene with his stirring renditions of “Somewhere in My Past” and “Nandito Lang Ako,” which garnered online buzz and revived interest in classic OPM.
With his distinct crooning style and raw emotional delivery, Mendrez connected with listeners in a deeply personal way—proof that heartfelt music transcends background and career paths.
Now under the management of David, Jojo is turning the page and focusing fully on the music.
“Wala nang kontrobersya (No more controversies),” David emphasized. “Our goal is to highlight Jojo’s voice and musicality, not the noise.”
Leaving the past behind
Mendrez acknowledged past controversies that linked him to actors Mark Herras and Rainier Castillo, but he views those moments as stepping stones.
“Walang nagplano sa mga nangyari, pero kahit paano, may napala kami pareho ni Mark (Nobody planned what happened but at least, Mark and I got something from it),” he said candidly. “It brought attention to my songs. Yes, may (there is) bashing, pero mas nanaig ang suporta (but more support prevailed).”
Upcoming releases:
revivals, originals
Following the success of his earlier singles, Mendrez is poised to expand his discography with a slate of notable projects, including:
• “Tamis ng Unang Halik” — A revival of Tina Paner’s hit, arranged by Louie Ocampo and supervised by original composer Doc Mon del Rosario.
• “Boy” (retitled “Babe”) — A reimagining of Timmy Cruz’s iconic 1980s hit with updated lyrics: “I love you babe… kung alam mo lang…”.
• “Pare Mahal Mo Raw Ako” — A fresh take on Michael Pangilinan’s emotionally-charged ballad about identity and acceptance.
• “Yakap” by Junior and “Bakit Ba Ganyan” by Dina Bonnevie — Two more timeless tracks that will be revived through Jojo’s rich vocals.
• A brand-new Christmas single penned by Manalo, set for release this holiday season.
These revivals aim to preserve and celebrate Filipino musical heritage, while introducing classic tunes to a new generation through Jojo’s soul-stirring voice.
Debut EP in the works
Alongside his tribute covers, Jojo is also working on a collection of original songs that will make up his first EP (extended play) under Star Music. These fresh tracks are expected to showcase his depth not only as a singer but as a modern OPM storyteller — one who brings sincerity, vulnerability and emotional resonance to every performance.
“With each song, I want to share stories that connect — whether it’s about love, longing or personal growth,” Jojo shared. “I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
As he carves a new path in music, Mendrez is proving that it is never too late to follow your calling — and that sometimes, the most powerful songs come from lived experience. With his voice, passion and a strong team behind him, Mendrez is ready to take center stage as one of OPM’s most moving new voices.
