The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) believes that Karl Eldrew Yulo will win gold medals when the country hosts the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships this November at the Newport World Resorts in Pasay City.
GAP president Cynthia Carrion told DAILY TRIBUNE that the younger brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo has what it takes to challenge for medals in six apparatus against the best young gymnasts in the world.
The 16-year-old gymnast is currently in Japan training under Munehiro Kugimiya — Carlos’ former mentor.
“He’s going to win the World Championships. He’s good in the floor exercise, vault, and pommel horse. He knows how to turn his body around,” Carrion said.
“Carlos was never in the final of the pommel horse in the Asian Championships, but Eldrew made it in the final.”
Yulo had already proven that he can compete with the best gymnasts in the world, just like his older brother.
In fact, he plucked a silver medal in the vault event of the Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships in Jecheon, South Korea last June.
Yulo also pocketed three silver medals in the individual all-around, vault, and floor exercise in the Pacific Rim Championships in Colombia last year.
Carrion is confident the younger Yulo will be able to strike gold in front of his friends and family with a supportive home crowd rallying behind him.
“Eldrew will win it. It will be nice for the country to see our athlete win the gold medal in our country,” Carrion said.
