Former Azkals midfielder Chieffy Caligdong is questioning the composition of the Philippine men’s U16 squad that was made public Thursday.

In a social media post last Friday, Caligdong asked how the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) selected its squad with most of the players based in Metro Manila.

The Philippines will be competing in the Lion City Cup in Singapore from 8 to 13 July.

“Question for the Philippine Football Federation: Why is the national team being assembled and sent out without holding open qualifiers — especially in the provinces where there’s a lot of untapped talent? “Many young players across the country, particularly outside Metro Manila, never get the opportunity to showcase their skills,” Caligdong said.

“A national team should represent the whole nation, and that starts with giving equal chances for everyone to try out. Hoping to see a more inclusive and transparent process in the future. Our grassroots and provincial players deserve the same platform.”

DAILY TRIBUNE tried but PFF secretary general Angelico Mercader did not answer as of press time.

Caligdong, who is now based in Canada as a coach for Tecumseh United FC, was among the best local talents the Philippines has ever produced.

The Pototan, Iloilo native broke through the football scene after competing for Western Visayas in the Palarong Pambansa before joining Union Manila, Air Force and Green Archers United.

He was one of the key players for the Azkals from 2004 to 2017 and scored 16 goals in 71 appearances.

Caligdong was one of the best local footballers in the Azkals despite Filipino-foreign talents like Phil and James Younghusband, Neil Etheridge, Stephan Schrock and Anghel and Juani Guirado gained popularity.

Caligdong was even selected to be part of the ASEAN All-Star squad in 2014 and was the only Filipino representative.

Caligdong stressed he never forced his way into the roster during his stint and worked his way up to earn his spot.

“I was cut from the national team three times but I never forced my parents to pay so that I could say I join the squad,” Caligdong said.

“If we need money or connections to get in, I think it is time to ask: Is the fight and struggle for the game still real?”
