As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate, the Philippine government is stepping up efforts to ensure the well-being of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) caught in the crossfire.
The Department of Health (DoH) is offering telemedicine consultations and psychosocial support to the affected Filipinos in Israel — many of whom have been displaced or are awaiting repatriation.
In an emotional message during an online counseling session on Saturday, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa assured the OFWs that they are not alone.
“To our dear overseas Filipinos in Israel, the whole of the Philippine government stands with you during this difficult time,” Herbosa said. “We know the situation is incredibly challenging. We’re here to assist you in every way we can and offer our sincere encouragement.”
According to the DoH, at least 60 OFWs joined the virtual session, which included six psychiatrists and 11 psychosocial facilitators. Participants were given individual care in breakout rooms to ensure their needs were addressed in a more personal setting.
Herbosa said the department is planning to hold biweekly counseling sessions, depending on the evolving needs of the participants.
The initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with the Mariveles Mental Health and Wellness General Hospital, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers.
Another free and confidential counseling session was also conducted Friday night by the Philippine Embassy in Israel.

In a recent press briefing, Herbosa announced that telemedicine support will continue for those still in Israel, including a scheduled Zoom consultation the following evening.
