Senator Christopher “Bong” Go marked his birthday on 14 June by celebrating with fisherfolk in Davao del Norte, focusing on the importance of food security and showing support for those who help put food on the tables of Filipino families.
By the sea, Go shared a simple yet meaningful boodle fight with the local community, featuring freshly caught seafood that he personally purchased to help support their livelihood. The shared meal became a symbol of unity and a purposeful way to honor the hardworking fishermen and their families.
“To everyone who greeted me, thank you very much. God bless us all. I am grateful for your continued support. I will serve you to the best of my ability,” Go said.
He explained that he prefers to spend his birthdays with those in need, inspired by the example of former president Rodrigo Duterte who used to celebrate by helping others.
“I chose to celebrate here because I don’t really hold parties. When former president Duterte was still mayor, he didn’t celebrate with parties either. He would often feed the poor in Smokey Mountain or visit cancer patients. I chose to spend this day with our fishermen and their families,” Go added.
Go also discussed key legislative measures that aim to uplift the lives of fisherfolk and rural workers. Among them is Republic Act 11901 or the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Development Financing Enhancement Act of 2022, which provides better access to credit for farmers, fisherfolk, and agri-based workers to improve their productivity and well-being.
He also co-sponsored Republic Act 11953 or the New Agrarian Emancipation Act, which condones the debts of agrarian reform beneficiaries, including interest, penalties, and surcharges. The law offers significant financial relief to farmers, allowing them to focus on improving their livelihoods.
Go emphasized the vital role of farmers and fisherfolk in ensuring that no Filipino family goes hungry.
“You can count on my office to always be open for you. We will continue working on programs that can help your livelihood and welfare. Let us work together so that no Filipino will go hungry,” he said.
Known for his Malasakit advocacy, Go said the celebration was a reflection of his personal commitment to public service, guided by humility and gratitude for hardworking Filipinos.
“To our fishermen here in Davao del Norte, you are important to our society. I will continue to work and support projects that will help improve your livelihood and health. I will serve to the best of my ability because that is my commitment, to serve,” Go added.
