In a glittering ceremony that marked a new chapter for Philippine pageantry, Christine Juliane “CJ” Opiaza was formally crowned Miss Grand International 2024 on 3 June at the MGI Hall in Bangkok, Thailand.
She assumed the title after the dethroning of the original winner, Rachel Gupta of India, making her the first Filipina to wear the golden crown.
From first runner-up to Miss Grand International
Opiaza, who originally placed as first runner-up at the MGI 2024 finals seven months ago, returned to the same stage, this time not as a hopeful contender but as the organization’s new queen.
Her crowning followed the dismissal of Gupta, whose title was revoked due to alleged failure to fulfill official duties and unauthorized external engagements. The transition, though unexpected, was executed with dignity and celebration, with MGI president Nawat Itsaragrisil himself placing the crown and sash on Opiaza’s shoulders.
Wearing an exquisite emerald gown by Filipino designer Mak Tumang, Opiaza beamed with emotion and pride. Her coronation was streamed live via GrandTV, watched by pageant fans around the world, and greeted with roaring cheers when the Philippine national anthem was played in her honor.
A moment written in gold
Tears welled in Opiaza’s eyes as she took the microphone for her first speech as Miss Grand International 2024. Her words, delivered with a blend of gratitude and humor, struck a chord with those present.
“This moment feels surreal. I stood here months ago as a finalist, praying to make my country proud. And now, to be here again, this time as your Miss Grand International, is truly overwhelming.”
She recalled a lighthearted moment from the competition:
“There was a dinner where Papa [Nawat] asked me, ‘Philippines, why so late?’ I’m asking the same thing now, ‘Papa, why so late?’ But kidding aside, I believe the best things happen at the right time.”
Representing the Phl, honoring the legacy
Opiaza acknowledged the weight of the responsibility now that she holds one of the most prestigious crowns in international pageantry. She promised to carry the MGI legacy with grace and commitment.
“Before I signed up for this job, I already knew I was born ready. I embrace this challenge not just for myself but for every Filipino who has ever dreamed of hearing our country’s name called as the winner.”
The 26-year-old thanked her team, her designers, the MGI family, and fans across the Philippines and Thailand. She also made special mention of Arnold Vegafria, the Miss Grand Philippines national director, who stood by her side during the coronation.
“There’s a moment of transition and change, and that’s how we grow. This is my golden moment, and a historic win for the Philippines.”
Walk into history
Following her acceptance speech, Opiaza took her first official walk as Miss Grand International 2024, a moment filled with applause, cheers and national pride. Her poise, elegance and heart radiated in every step, a visual embodiment of a queen.
This crowning marks a milestone for Philippine pageantry — the first Miss Grand International title after years of near wins, close calls and tireless support from fans. For Opiaza, it is a victory that symbolizes more than a title; it’s about resilience, patience and purpose.
“Lalaban lang tayo, lagi. This crown is for the Philippines. This is for the Miss Grand International organization. And together, we will continue the legacy,” she said.
A queen for the times
In a world that constantly evolves, Opiaza’s reign begins with authenticity and strength. Her unexpected rise to the throne is a reminder that destiny rewards those who are grounded, grateful and ready.
She steps into the global stage not only as a queen of beauty but also as a woman of character, ready to represent her country with pride, empathy and unshakable resolve.
