When people think of a “green car,” they rarely imagine one that hits 100 km/h in three seconds flat.

And yet, here we are.

The latest Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, a car rooted in decades of racing pedigree, just bagged the title of 2025 World Performance Car, beating out 17 other high-powered machines from around the globe. That’s not a fluke. It’s also Porsche’s eighth win in this category, a record in itself.

But what makes this win especially interesting is what’s under the hood, or technically, under the rear hatch. This one’s a hybrid. Yes, the kind you’d expect to find in a crossover… only this one roars instead of hums.

Dubbed the T-Hybrid, the GTS’s new setup features a twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-six paired with two electric motors. One of those motors lives inside the turbocharger, an “eTurbo,” if you will, giving you instant boost with zero lag. The second motor hangs out in the transmission, helping with acceleration and even sneaky energy recovery when you coast or hit the brakes.

All in, that’s 541 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque, channeled through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Simply put, this car bolts from 0 to 100 km/h in a blink, just 3.0 seconds, then keeps going until it hits a mind-bending 312 km/h.

In addition, despite all that tech and power, it weighs the same as the model it replaces. Usually, hybrids bulk up with batteries and extra hardware. But Porsche found a way to sneak in the electrics without messing up the car’s legendary balance.

Step inside, and it’s all classic 911 with just enough new toys to remind you it’s 2025. The cockpit features a 12.6-inch digital display that lets you switch between modern and retro gauges, plus, finally, a start button on the steering wheel. (A small detail, sure, but one that enthusiasts have wanted for years.)

While all this sounds like a love letter to speed junkies, the bigger story here is what it represents; performance cars evolving, adapting, and proving that sustainability and excitement don’t have to live on opposite sides of the track.

In an interview, Timo Resch, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said, “We took what we learned from racing and brought it to the road.”

He’s not wrong.

The 911 has always been about precision, poise and pushing boundaries. With this hybrid GTS, it’s pushing into new territory, faster, smarter and just a little bit greener.
