LTO suspends jeepney driver in Cainta for drunk driving

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has imposed a 90-day preventive suspension on the license of a jeepney driver who allegedly drove under the influence and crashed into multiple vehicles along Imelda Avenue in Cainta, Rizal, on 30 May, according to Cainta mayor-elect and municipal administrator Keith Nieto.

"Do you remember that video? A driver of a passenger jeepney who was found driving under the influence of alcohol crashed into a stopped vehicle at the traffic light. And then I said that we will file a case against the jeepney driver. I'm serious," Nieto said.

The driver, who operates along the Binangonan–Sta. Lucia route, reportedly rammed into two cars and a motorcycle, causing injuries and property damage.

According to the LTO, this may be the first time a local government unit has moved to have a driver's license revoked.

Nieto said the municipality is providing free legal assistance to those injured in the incident.

"Here in Cainta, this is our new policy. I just provided them lawyers to file a case at the LTO to revoke the licenses of irresponsible drivers," he said.

"In the first salvo, we immediately got a 90-day preventive suspension. There will a hearing on 9 June and the municipality's lawyers will appear on behalf of the complainants (we have prepared a special power of attorney for them) for the case to continue," he added.
