The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has ordered an immediate rematch between Emanuel Navarrete and Charly Suarez following the California State Athletic Commission’s (CSAC) decision to overturn the Mexican champion’s controversial win.
The bout, originally ruled an eighth-round technical decision victory for Navarrete, was changed to a “no contest” after the CSAC reviewed referee Ed Collantes’ mistaken call of an accidental head clash resulting in a cut in the sixth round. Replays showed the cut that halted the fight was caused by a clean punch from Suarez.
Suarez and his camp had filed a protest, hoping for the result to be reversed into a TKO victory in his favor. While the CSAC didn’t go that far, Suarez expressed gratitude for the decision.
“While this is not the result that we wanted, I believe this is still a positive outcome,” Suarez said in a statement. “I am now focusing on the future. I am ready for a rematch. I hope Navarrete takes the fight because we have unfinished business to settle.”
Navarrete retained the WBO junior lightweight title in the controversial 10 May fight, prompting widespread backlash from Filipino boxing fans and pundits who believed Suarez had been robbed of a rightful win.
The WBO's rematch order comes as a vindication for Suarez, who plans to return to training by mid-June.
