Don’t be surprised if Charly Suarez ends up retiring without ever getting his well-deserved shot at a world title.

Recent developments only point to what could happen to him if the World Boxing Organization (WBO) continues to turn a blind eye on the Filipino fighter’s status as mandatory challenger to Mexican champion Emanuel Navarrete.

You see, Suarez was passed over as mandatory challenger when Navarrete was allowed to go after Eduardo Nuñez, then the International Boxing Federation titleholder early this year.

Since a unification fight supersedes a mandatory defense, Suarez gave way and Navarrete and his promoter Top Rank got what they wanted.

Instead of getting discouraged, Suarez just pressed forward and even took a risky fight last July to ensure that he retains his top ranking in the 130-pound class.

Suarez easily won the fight and thought that a rematch with Navarrete would take place since he has held the status of mandatory challenger for a year now.

Instead of arranging a fight between Navarrete and Suarez, what Top Rank did with the support of the WBO was to bypass Suarez again pit their poster boy against O’Shaquie Foster, holder of the World Boxing Council jewels for a showdown slated 24 October in Texas.

To soften the blow, the deal mandates the winner to face Suarez within 180 days after their fight.

So what happens if Navarrete becomes a three-belt champion?

There’s still a fourth belt to be won: the World Boxing Association strap.

Navarrete’s dream is to collect all four and become undisputed champion.

Why would a Suarez fight take place?

Meanwhile, Suarez has no choice but to oblige and stay silent.

Good thing he doesn’t come out on social media criticizing the WBO and Top Rank for being treated like trash.

And you know what?

According to Suarez’s manager and trainer Delfin Boholst, they are not even receiving a step-aside fee for giving way for the second straight time.

I do understand why they are not in attack mode.

Expressing their inner thoughts could jeopardize that No. 1 rating.

The last thing you’d like to see is Suarez being dropped from that lofty spot.

Will that happen?

Of course it could.

What they just did to him is proof it can be done.
