Senator Christopher "Bong" Go sent his Malasakit Team to Barangay Cupang, Muntinlupa City on Thursday, 29 May, to provide assistance to families affected by a recent fire, while reiterating his push for stronger fire safety and housing programs for urban poor communities.
Go’s team distributed relief supplies including water containers, grocery packs, clothing, vitamins, snacks, caps, and sports equipment to 27 affected households. The activity was held at the Cupang Barangay Hall, with Barangay Captain Luvi Constantino present.
“Don’t lose hope. Material things can be replaced, but life cannot. A lost life is gone forever. Let’s help one another — who else will help us but our fellow Filipinos? I will continue to serve you to the best of my ability,” the senator said in Filipino, emphasizing the importance of unity and bayanihan during difficult times.
He also reminded barangay officials of their responsibility to support vulnerable constituents, urging them to always keep their doors open to those in need.
Go took the opportunity to highlight long-term solutions to fire-related disasters, citing Republic Act No. 11589 or the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act of 2021, which he authored and co-sponsored. The law aims to improve the capabilities of firefighters through enhanced training and upgraded equipment to ensure faster and more effective emergency response.
In addressing the housing needs of displaced families, the senator pointed to Senate Bill No. 192, which seeks to establish a Rental Housing Subsidy Program. If passed, the measure will provide financial support to low-income families who have lost their homes to disasters, helping them transition from temporary shelters to more stable accommodations.
Go also cited the recently enacted Republic Act No. 12076 or the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which mandates the construction of disaster-resilient evacuation centers in every city and municipality to ensure that displaced residents are given safe and humane shelter.
The senator, widely known as “Mr. Malasakit,” reaffirmed his commitment to public service, saying he believes that serving others is a form of service to God.
