Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) aims to nearly double the annual passenger capacity of the Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA) to 3.9 million by 2030 from the current 2 million under a P4.53-billion upgrade plan.

The infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group said Wednesday that the plan — set to begin after it formally takes over BPIA in June under a 30-year concession — will cover terminal expansion, modern aviation systems installation, and airside and landside facilities improvements.

In the first two years alone, AIC plans to raise capacity to 2.5 million passengers annually.

"The modernization of BPIA is not just about upgrading infrastructure — it’s about enabling the continued rise of Bohol as a vibrant tourism and economic hub in the Visayas," AIC President and CEO Cosette V. Canilao said. "We are proud to support the province’s aspirations through transformative infrastructure ecosystems such as BPIA."

Currently the ninth-busiest airport in the country, BPIA supports Bohol’s development priorities, which include sustainable tourism, climate-smart agriculture, and micro-enterprise growth.

Latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that Bohol posted a 6.6 percent economic growth in 2023, outpacing the national average of 5.5 percent. Key tourism-related sectors such as transportation and storage grew by 20.4 percent, while accommodation and food services expanded by 27.9 percent.

BPIA will be the latest addition to AIC’s growing aviation portfolio, which includes the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Laguindingan International Airport in Misamis Oriental.
