History is on the line as five-peat-seeking National University (NU) and determined Far Eastern University (FEU) battle one last time in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 men’s volleyball finals today at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Set at 2 p.m., the do-or-die clash promises fireworks as the Bulldogs aim to complete a golden double following the NU women’s team’s championship earlier this week.

A victory would also mark the Bulldogs’ seventh overall men’s title and extend their dynasty that began in Season 81.

NU showed its championship mettle in Game 2 on Wednesday, mounting a decisive rally in the fifth set to prevail, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11, and force a series decider.

Regardless of the outcome, NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin is proud of how the Bulldogs have sustained their success despite the turnover of key players from last season’s title-winning roster.

“I think it’s really about the trust they have in us — the players, the program. Whoever we bring in, they believe in the system, and that trust is something they repay by performing well,” Alinsunurin said.

“That’s what keeps our volleyball program at NU growing stronger.”

Leading the charge last game was Buds Buddin, who unleashed 20 kills and provided the veteran presence NU needed in the high-pressure moments.

“Our maturity really showed on the court. That experience, especially during crucial moments, gave us the edge,” Buddin said.

“Our blocking also played a big role. We were able to check their attacks and convert those into points. That shift in momentum turned the game in our favor.”

FEU, the most decorated men’s volleyball program in the UAAP with 25 titles, is determined to bounce back and snap a 13-year title drought.

Despite the loss, Tamaraws head coach Eddieson Orcullo remains optimistic.

“What happened in Game 2 was a test of character for everyone — coaches, players and even supporters,” Orcullo said.

“It’s easy to rally when you’re winning. But this is where we’ll see who really stands with the team.”

FEU will need to solve its endgame woes after surrendering leads in key moments.

“It’s a big advantage when you get ahead early. That’s something we need to work on — starting strong,” Orcullo added.

“It’s tough when you’re always trying to chase a five or six-point deficit.”
