A 20-year-old student boxer from Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) died Sunday, a day after competing in a match during the 2025 State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Games held in Camiguin province.
The victim, identified as Marc Mateo Castillo, represented the Southern Tagalog region in the national-level intercollegiate sports event. According to initial reports, Castillo’s match against a competitor from the National Capital Region ended via Referee Stopped Contest in the third round.
He was rushed to Camiguin General Hospital but was pronounced dead the following day. The cause of death has yet to be determined.
OMSC said in a statement Monday that it is closely coordinating with concerned agencies and SCUAA committees to ensure a thorough review of the incident.
“College officials have personally reached out to Mr. Castillo's family and are extending full assistance in the necessary arrangements for his dignified return home,” the school said.
The university also announced the suspension of all curricular and extracurricular student activities — except for on-the-job training — outside Occidental Mindoro “to ensure the safety and security of all students.”
