Meralco Vice‑President and Corporate Communications head Joe R. Zaldarriaga has urged public‑relations and communications practitioners to “take a stand for truth” by joining the industry‑wide push against fake news and misinformation.
Speaking at a Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) seminar titled Combating Fake News: Strategies for Brands, Media and Society, Zaldarriaga underscored the role of critical thinking, collaboration and media literacy in protecting both the public and organizational reputations.
“In today’s digital age, it is important to stay informed and united as communicators. … We need to make our peers more equipped to reduce the spread of misinformation,” said Zaldarriaga, who also sits on the PRSP board. “This will enable us to lead with integrity and clarity, and ensure that truth prevails in the communications industry.”
During his talk, Decoding Deception: Navigating the Era of Fake News, he outlined practical steps for spotting false content and strengthening fact‑checking protocols within companies.
With nearly four decades in corporate communications, Zaldarriaga has consistently championed ethical practice and responsible messaging.
Founded in 1957, PRSP is the country’s premier organization for public‑relations professionals and is committed to upholding the highest standards in the field.
