The Department of Health (DoH) on Sunday activated a Code White Alert for the observance of Holy Week in the country, making all public hospitals ready for emergencies.

In a statement, the DoH said the Code White Alert will remain in effect until 20 April, Easter Sunday.

“This proactive measure aims to ensure the readiness of health facilities and personnel to respond to any potential health emergencies during this period of increased public activity,” the health department said.

“All medical personnel, especially those in emergency rooms and critical care units, are prepared for a potential increase in patient volume due to accidents, injuries, or other health-related incidents that may arise during the Holy Week,” it added.

It continued: “The DoH’s central monitoring and coordination ensure a seamless and efficient response to health emergencies across different regions, benefiting patients wherever they may be.”

Likewise, the Health department said that it will closely monitor health events and coordinate with regional and local health offices to ensure a synchronized and efficient response to any emergencies.

A Code White Alert is declared during national events, holidays or celebrations that can potentially cause mass casualty incidents or emergencies.

During a Code White Alert, identified medical personnel and staff are placed on standby for the immediate acceptance and treatment of incoming patients at the hospitals.

Prevent heat stroke

In a statement, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa also urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and healthy Holy Week.

“Let us stay alert on the roads, especially now that many people are traveling. Due to the intense heat, we must also be cautious of its effects on the body,” he said.

“Heat stroke can be prevented by avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and by staying well-hydrated. Food also spoils quickly during hot weather, so we must prepare and store food properly and carefully,” he added.

The Health chief also reminded the public to continue observing minimum public health standards, while also reaffirming the Department of Health’s commitment to ensuring accessible and efficient healthcare services throughout the Holy Week period.

“We encourage everyone to observe Holy Week responsibly. Please go to DoH hospitals, which remain on standby and ready to provide healthcare services for those in need during this Holy Week,” he said.
