As National University (NU) continues to assert its dominance in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament, Bella Belen remains an indispensable piece in the Lady Bulldogs’ explosive championship core.
Even without the presence of multi-awarded wing spiker Alyssa Solomon, Belen has stepped up her game, producing an impressive 16 points from 14 attacks and two aces in their win over University of the East, 25-8, 25-22, 25-12, on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena.
Despite the absence of Solomon, Belen is quick to reject the notion that she has become the “buhatera” — a player who single-handedly carries the team.
“Everyone on our team can contribute, so I don’t really take on the term ‘buhatera.’ I’m just always doing my best for the team in whatever I can do,” she said.
For Belen, being a leader goes beyond scoring points. As a senior, she also takes on the responsibility of guiding her teammates, offering mentorship and support, something she believes is equally crucial to the team’s success.
“It’s not just about scoring, but also about being a big sister and guiding them. That’s also something I can contribute as a senior, helping in whatever way I can,” Belen explained.
Despite facing a few setbacks, including upsets to Adamson University and University of the Philippines, Belen remains confident that NU’s pursuit of the championship is far from over.
“We want to show that just because we lose a game, it doesn’t mean we’re no longer capable of winning or becoming champions. Anyone can be a champion now, really,” she said, exuding confidence in her team’s abilities.
“I still believe we can do it, even after losses. I have great trust in myself and my teammates, and I’m confident we’ll fight until the end.”
While NU eyes its continued push for the championship, the battle for the Final Four intensifies for other teams, particularly Far Eastern University, which is gaining inroads.
The Lady Tamaraws edged out Ateneo de Manila University, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13, on the same day, placing them on the cusp of securing a playoff spot in third place with an 8-4 record. A strong finish could land them a twice-to-beat advantage, but crucial games against Adamson and De La Salle University are on the horizon.
Meanwhile, Ateneo’s campaign has come to a close with the defeat, as its 4-8 record officially ends its hopes for postseason play.
