Quezon City police have arrested a retired US Navy serviceman involved in a multi-vehicle crash along Commonwealth Avenue at noon on Friday.
P/Lt. Col. Jose Luis Aguirre, Chief of the District Traffic Enforcement Unit (DTEU), says the suspect is a 68-year-old resident of Makati City.
Aguirre said that at 12:50 p.m. on Friday, the white SUV was involved in multiple vehicle and property collisions along Commonwealth Avenue, in front of the car aircon repair shop and within the vicinity of a gas station.
The suspect was driving when his vehicle initially collided with the rear of a stationary van. A mobile patrol from Fairview Police Station 5 immediately responded. For unknown reasons, the suspect’s vehicle moved backward, then accelerated forward again, colliding a second time with the rear of the van.
Due to the impact of the second collision, the van was pushed forward and collided with the rear right side of a parked FB Van and the rear right portion of a stationary sedan. Subsequently, the SUV moved backward toward the gas station, where it collided with a pump island and bollard.
Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported, but all involved vehicles and gas station property sustained substantial damage.
“The suspect is now in police custody, and we are preparing charges for reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property. Paalala din po sa ating mga motorista na siguruhing nasa maayos na condition pag nagmamaneho. (A reminder to our motorists to ensure that your vehicle is in good condition when driving.) Road safety begins with personal responsibility, your alertness and well-being can save lives,” QCPD District Director P/Brig. Gen. Melecio Buslig said.
He added that the suspect will be charged for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple damages to property, with charges now being prepared pending the completion of necessary evidence.
