The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) voiced strong concern over remarks made by Misamis Oriental Gov. Peter “Senior Pedro” Unabia during his recent campaign sortie.
On 6 April, Unabia highlighted his administration’s nursing scholarship program for aspiring nurses, citing that it was intended “only for beautiful women.” He further claimed that having “unattractive” nurses could worsen the condition of male patients.
In a statement on Monday, the PCW criticized the governor’s comment as “sexist” and harmful, saying that it reinforced stereotypes that single out the value of women based on their appearance instead of their competence and expertise.
“While PCW recognizes the value of providing scholarships to women — particularly in fields like STEM — it is imperative that such programs uphold the fundamental principle of equality and inclusivity,” the statement added.
The PCW also called out leaders and aspiring public officials to refrain from using harmful or demeaning language during this campaign season and beyond.
“Instead, they must focus on presenting real, tangible solutions that uplift all Filipinos — regardless of gender.”
The Commission on Elections also issued a Show Cause Order against Unabia on Monday, requiring him to explain why he should not be disqualified from running for reelection in 2025 over his discriminatory comments about nursing scholarships.
