National University (NU) was dealt a major blow in more ways than one during its second loss in the second round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Not only did the defending champions fall to Adamson in four sets, 23-25, 25-15, 26-28, 22-25, they also missed the presence of star opposite spiker Alyssa Solomon—who, although in uniform, was sidelined due to a minor injury.

“I was sad that I couldn’t contribute, but I trust this team completely. I know everyone will step up when needed,” the 23-year old winger said.

Solomon, one of NU’s most consistent weapons on both ends of the court, suffered a mild sprain in her left ankle during training the night before their match against the Lady Falcons. Though she suited up and joined the warm-up, team officials ultimately decided to err on the side of caution.

“During our last drills in training, she tweaked her ankle a bit,” reigning Most Valuable Player Bella Belen said.

“There was still some pain during warm-ups, so we thought it was best not to risk her (Solomon) health, especially now that we’re heading into the final stretch of the elimination round.”

NU sorely missed Solomon’s firepower and leadership on the court. Though Belen put up 19 points along with 21 receptions, the Lady Bulldogs could not keep pace with Adamson’s super rookie Shaina Nitura, who exploded for 32 points to lead the upset.

Arah Panique stepped up in Solomon’s absence with 10 points built on six attacks, two blocks, and two service aces.

Still, Solomon expressed confidence and pride in her teammates.

“I’m very proud of Arah (Panique) because I saw how she embraced the role given to her.”

“Maybe we just came up short this time, but I know we’ll bounce back.”

With NU dropping to a 9-2 record, they remain safely in the Final Four, needing just two more wins to secure a twice-to-beat advantage.

However, questions remain about whether Solomon will be ready in time for their next match against University of the East on Wednesday.

As the season draws closer to its climax, NU hopes their ace spiker can make a full recovery and return in time to help them in their title-retention bid.
