  • A long-standing MRT-3 policy limiting hand-carried luggage has drawn concern from commuters who say it adds unnecessary hassle to their daily travel.

In response, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered  MRT-3 general manager Michael Capati to immediately suspend the policy while it undergoes a full review, adding that regulations should be more commuter-friendly.

Dizon said he was recently informed of the policy and questioned its practicality, especially for passengers who rely on the MRT-3 for work, school and errands.

The MRT-3 prohibits passengers from bringing dangerous items such as firearms, explosives, bladed weapons, flammable substances, illegal drugs and foul-smelling food.

Bulky luggage exceeding 2ft x 2ft, elongated items over 5ft., and unpackaged or gift-wrapped items not opened for inspection are also not allowed. Foldable bikes with wheels over 20” and uncaged pets are prohibited as well.

The Transportation Department did not provide details on when the policy could be reinstated, but assured the public it is moving swiftly to address the issue.
