The works of five Filipino artists grace Corso Como 88 at One Ayala this month. In an exhibit called Five States of Being, the distinct styles and perspectives of Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi, Gladys Tiongco, Karina Orozco, JJ Duque and Danger Sanchez present a rich tapestry of artistic expression.
Nothing could be more diverse than these five accomplished individuals, and their art now grace limited-edition silk scarves that may be worn in a variety of ways — as neckpiece, as a silky top, as a waist cincher, head scarf, bag décor — as far as your own imagination takes you.
Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi, a pioneering figure in Philippine printmaking, brings her profound mastery of copper-plate etching and allegorical symbolism to the forefront. A recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award, her work delves into the complexities of societal roles, spiritual connections and political realities, evolving into captivating still lifes that explore everyday objects. Her distinguished career, marked by international recognition and academic contributions, lends a historical depth to the exhibition.
JJ Duque, a Manila-based artist known for his abstract drawings, challenges conventional artistic norms with his intricate use of colored pens and pencils. His work, a blend of technical precision and emotional expression, explores macro and micro perspectives through rhythmic patterns and philosophical meditations. Duque’s commitment to individuality and personal expression offers a unique and thought-provoking experience.
Danger Sanchez, an outsider artist with a rich background in music and film, presents his unique mixed-media decoupage. His works, born from coffee art and layered with various materials, reflect a fusion of personal experiences and cultural influences, particularly those inspired by Korean dramas. Sanchez’s eclectic approach and continuous exploration of new creative avenues add a dynamic layer to the exhibition.
Gladys Tiongco, a lawyer and public servant, debuts as a watercolor artist in Five States of Being. Her vibrant and expressive floral and still life paintings, born from a newfound passion, reveal a natural talent for capturing the beauty of nature. Tiongco’s journey from law to art serves as an inspiring testament to the power of creative exploration and personal growth.
Karina Orozco focuses on hand-painted mandala art, creating intricate and meditative patterns with acrylic paint on wood. Her use of dot and brush painting, combined with craft mirrors and rhinestones, adds texture and depth to her works. Orozco’s mandalas, often inspired by personal connections and client preferences, reflect a harmonious blend of artistic skill and spiritual resonance.
