The national grid has received a much-needed boost after MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen), the renewable energy arm of Meralco PowerGen Corp., switches on the 52.8-megawatt MGreen Cordon Solar power plant in Cordon, Isabela.

The company said on Wednesday that the solar facility, one of the largest operational solar plants in Region 2 under the government’s Green Energy Auction Program, will offset over 50,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to removing more than 11,700 gasoline-powered cars from the road. It will supply clean energy to over 53,000 households.

“We’re proud to share this with you as we switch on our solar power plant that’s completed four months ahead of schedule. We want to show that economic progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” MGreen president and CEO Dennis B. Jordan said on Wednesday.

Community take care of

Energy Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan said the plant’s economic and social benefits, citing job creation, local business growth, and socio-economic developments in Barangay Capirpiriwan, alongside the Energy Regulation 1-94 benefit, which grants host communities a share of the power plant’s profits. “There are several benefits from this project,” Marasigan said.

MGreen pointed out that the project was completed this month, four months ahead of the original July schedule.

The company plans to expand its renewable energy footprint further, with an additional 85.2 MWac of solar capacity set for completion in 2025, including projects in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, and Baras, Rizal.
