ANTIQUE — Senator Loren Legarda has secured additional funding to complete the redevelopment of Antique Airport in San Jose de Buenavista, reinforcing her vision of transforming the province into a hub for commerce, tourism, and economic growth.
Under the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA), Legarda and Congressman Antonio Agapito “AA” Legarda obtained P125 million for the completion of the airport’s terminal building and the extension of its runway to 1,800 meters. The expansion will make the runway comparable to Caticlan’s and capable of accommodating larger aircraft, particularly Airbus models.
“In less than a decade, with the support of my brother and through the initiatives we have tirelessly pursued, the province will soon witness the full operations of Antique Airport. No longer just a quiet province on the sidelines, Antique is emerging as a vital gateway for commerce, tourism, and development,” Legarda said.
Legarda has spearheaded the airport’s modernization since 2017, when she first secured funding for a new terminal as chair of the Senate Committee on Finance. The airport’s runway, initially measuring 1,200 meters in 2016, was extended to 1,400 meters in 2018, allowing 80-seater propeller aircraft to land. Another extension in 2023 increased the length to 1,700 meters, with the upcoming expansion set to accommodate even larger aircraft.
During an inspection, Legarda emphasized the importance of ensuring the airport’s infrastructure meets safety and environmental standards. She directed the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to develop a master plan for the drainage system to prevent flooding and provide an updated progress report on the project.
“Ensuring the proper development of Antique Airport is crucial in strengthening our province’s connectivity and economic potential. Every peso allocated must translate into real progress for the people of Antique,” she stated.
The airport’s redevelopment is expected to enhance Antique’s accessibility and economic opportunities. With secured funding and ongoing infrastructure improvements, the facility is on track to becoming a modern, fully functional gateway for residents and visitors.
Senator Legarda, alongside Congressman AA Legarda, remains committed to advancing long-term improvements in Antique’s air transport facilities.
