The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Monday that it is investigating allegations of ghost students in the Senior High School (SHS) Voucher Program, involving 12 private schools across 9 divisions.
In a statement, DepEd confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine if any personnel or officials are implicated in this fraudulent activity. The department warned that if any wrongdoing is confirmed, it could lead to the termination of a school’s participation in the Senior High School Voucher Program.
“We take these allegations seriously. Any misuse of public funds intended for critical education programs will not be tolerated. This investigation is an essential step as we seek the truth and ensure accountability,” said Education Secretary Sonny Angara.
As part of the investigation, DepEd has begun taking corrective actions, including preparations to revoke the accreditation of the implicated schools and gather evidence against those responsible.
The department is also exploring legal measures against those found guilty, which may include both administrative and criminal sanctions, in line with existing laws and regulations.
Furthermore, DepEd assured the public that it will provide the necessary support to affected, legitimate students, ensuring their education will continue without interruption. The department also reiterated its commitment to strengthening monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar issues in the future.
