LOS ANGELES — LeBron James once again etched his name in the NBA record books, becoming both the youngest and oldest player in league history to score 40 points in a game.
The 39-year-old superstar led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 120-112 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night (US time), finishing with 42 points, 17 rebounds, and eight assists.
James, who initially set the record as the youngest player to score 40 points in a game, now joins Michael Jordan as the only other player to reach that mark at age 40.
The game showcased two teams in transition. The Lakers, fresh off a blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas for Luka Dončić, are awaiting their new teammate’s return from a calf strain.
Dončić, who received a roaring ovation from the Lakers crowd before tip-off, is reportedly targeting Monday for his debut in purple and gold.
Meanwhile, the Warriors have retooled their roster, acquiring Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat in a trade package headlined by Andrew Wiggins.
Butler arrived in Los Angeles shortly after the NBA finalized the deal, adding another dimension to Golden State’s evolving lineup around Stephen Curry.
The Lakers, despite Davis' trade-off, extended their winning streak to four games, improving to 30-19 and holding the fifth seed in the Western Conference standings. With James continuing to defy time and Dončić’s return on the horizon, Los Angeles remains a formidable contender as the season progresses.
