The local government of Malabon City has warned of the spread of fake news that malign the city’s officials and its respective programs.
Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval has expressed her condemnation of those who spread fake news, stressing the commitment of the local city council to providing reliable and quality programs.
“We remind all Malabon City residents to be vigilant, prudent, and responsible in their use of social media. They should also exercise caution with the information they receive, especially if it seems suspicious,” Sandoval said.
They have also reported an increase in accounts using “Mayor Jeannie Sandoval” and “Ricky Sandoval,” the mayor’s husband and the city’s former congressman, to send friend requests to certain individuals.
These accounts are also reportedly messaging residents, asking for their phone numbers with the promise of winning e-load.
Sandoval shared that they are currently gathering evidence with her legal counsel to file possible lawsuits against the creators of the alleged fake news.
The city government also reminded residents to be cautious of public posts on the pages “Malabon Lubog” and “Malabon News” that contain false information about the city mayor.
“Residents must be critical of misinformation, especially on social media, and verify information from official sources and legitimate channels, including the Facebook pages of the city government,” the mayor said.
The city government’s official Facebook page is “Malabon City Government,” while the mayor’s page is “Mayor Jeannie Sandoval,” marked with a white check next to her name.
