Kick things off with some animated fun. Directed by Foo Sing-Choong and featuring Zhang Ziyi’s voice, this 3D comedy takes you on a wild ride with a 10-year-old girl and the Chinese zodiac animals as they search for the missing dragon. Add a villain called the Roach King, and you’ve got a film that’s perfect for a family day out at the mall.
Calling all romantics! This one’s for you. Directed by Wang Weiming and based on Rao Xueman’s novel, it’s a bittersweet tale of young love between a student and a Taiwanese photographer. Their romance faces all kinds of hurdles —including family pressure.
What happens when music meets second chances? Andy Lau stars in this inspiring drama about a once-famous conductor mentoring a choir of troubled students. It’s all about the transformative power of music.
Chow Yun-fat takes the lead in this comedy-drama about a gambler trying to connect with his autistic son. Directed by Anthony Pun, it’s a story packed with heart, humor, and a good dose of redemption.
There are approximately 1.35 million Chinese residents in the Philippines, and their cultural influence is immense. Events like Chinese New Year — coinciding with the festival’s opening day on 29 January — are significant celebrations in many Chinese-Filipino communities.
This year’s Chinese New Year festivities, enjoyed by Chinoy communities, will span 15 days and feature traditional practices and delicious food. In light of this, the Spring Film Festival offers a variety of activities that add to the ongoing celebrations, allowing you to immerse yourself in Chinese culture in even more ways.
On 1 February, take a break from the screen and head to Shangri-La Plaza’s Atrium for a calligraphy workshop. This one-day event gives you a hands-on look at the art of Chinese calligraphy.
And happening on 2 February: the Chinese Music Concert. Expect traditional songs and dances that bring the rich sounds of Chinese culture to life. It’s one night only, so make it count.
The Spring Film Festival is brought to you by the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines and several cultural organizations. They’ve teamed up to give Filipino audiences a vibrant slice of Chinese culture through these films and activities.
Chinese cinema stands out for its visual mastery. From Zhang Yimou’s breathtaking cinematography to Wong Kar-wai’s deeply emotional storytelling, Chinese films are celebrated for blending stunning artistry with universal themes. They explore love, family and resilience — topics that Filipino audiences can easily relate to.
The Spring Film Festival lineup offers a wonderful opportunity to experience these stories. It’s more than just entertainment; it’s about gaining insight into another culture and its values through the universal language of film. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience. You’ll laugh, cry and maybe even walk away with a new favorite movie.
