The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) held a massive rally at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila on Monday to advocate for peace, unity and national harmony amid the ongoing political tensions.

The event attracted over a million followers, with the Manila Police District estimating the crowd at 1.5 million by 10 a.m. The INC members traveled in busloads from the provinces of Cavite, Quezon, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Zambales.

Similar rallies were held in 12 other cities, including Davao, where more than 175,000 gathered at San Pedro Square.

The religious group, whose endorsement is highly sought by politicians, called for an end to division and conflict in the country and government.

The rally came at a time of heightened political tensions, including multiple impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Palace seeks true unity

Meanwhile, Malacañang stressed the importance of listening to public opinion to understand the national sentiment.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said that such gatherings are a “bedrock right” under the Constitution and expressed confidence the rally would be peaceful and meaningful.

He urged government agencies to respect the rally and allow citizens to freely express their views and contribute to a national dialogue that would help to clarify key issues.

“Above all, we hope the opinions expressed will help clarify the issues facing our country and lead us to the true unity we long for,” he said.

Malacañang has denied involvement in the impeachment complaints, with Marcos calling them a “waste of time” that would hinder Congress from attending to more important matters.

A call for peace and cooperation

Thousands of policemen were deployed to provide order and security. There were no untoward incidents.

Speaking at the Manila rally, INC officials and members stressed the significance of fostering unity not just among church members but among all Filipinos.

The event featured prayers, inspirational talks and musical performances that underscored the call for a peaceful society where people prioritize the common good over partisan interests.

“There are many more things our citizens need that must be attended to. These will not be achieved if all we see taking place is conflict. Perhaps our countrymen who also desire peace and want our leaders to take care of the needs of our nation will not contradict the opinion given by President Marcos Jr.,” INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala said.

A message to policymakers

The rally sent a strong message to public officials and policymakers, urging them to focus on the country’s long-term stability and prosperity instead of engaging in divisive political rhetoric.

The INC leadership reminded elected officials of their responsibility to serve the people with integrity and dedication, putting the nation’s interests above personal or party agendas.

VP Sara hails INC rally

Vice President Sara Duterte congratulated those who participated in the nationwide “peace rally” organized by the INC.

“I sincerely congratulate everyone who participated in today’s nationwide peace rally. It is a powerful display of unity and faith whose only desire is peace towards the development of our country,” Duterte said in a statement.

The Vice President thanked members of the INC for holding the rally aimed at uniting all Filipinos for the betterment of our country.

“I thank our brothers and sisters in the Iglesia Ni Cristo for your continued efforts to bring understanding and unity among our countrymen,” she said.

“Amid rising commodity prices, poverty, and other problems, a peaceful and united nation will never be shaken and will rise again amid the challenge of time,” the Vice President added.

Go backs INC’s call

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go voiced his strong support for the call for peace and unity, urging Filipinos to work together for the common good, especially for the poor.

“Let us unite so we can work properly for the country and serve our fellow Filipinos, especially the poor, as many of our countrymen are in need of assistance,” Go said, emphasizing the importance of collective action.

He praised the Iglesia Ni Cristo and its leader, Eduardo V. Manalo, for their efforts to promote peace and unity.

“I salute our brethren from the Iglesia Ni Cristo for this important opportunity to express our value for peace and unity,” he said.

Go said the pursuit of peace went beyond political unity, aiming for a better quality of life for all Filipinos where the government ensures the public health, food security, education, and jobs, and where families can live without the threat of crime or addiction.

Comelec warns vs politicking

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminded politicians to refrain from politicking during religious gatherings like the large rally of the INC.

“This is a gathering for faith and unity. We are with our Iglesia siblings in their good intentions,” Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said. “It should not be taken advantage of by some for their personal gain. Avoid politicking.”

The rally came amid the political tensions following the filing of impeachment complaints against Vice President Duterte over her alleged misuse of confidential funds. The INC had previously announced its opposition to Duterte’s impeachment.
