The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued more than 1,100 show cause orders (SCOs) against erring motor vehicle owners and drivers since January this year, a significant improvement in the agency’s active enforcement of traffic rules and regulations for the safety of all road users.
One significant improvement in the LTO’s active response is the social media monitoring of traffic rule violations, including road rage incidents, which serve as the basis for issuing SCOs.
“Active social media monitoring, and even active monitoring of traditional media, in our efforts to fulfill the LTO’s mandate of ensuring road safety is now a standard practice within the agency,” LTO chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II said.
“Almost all Filipinos have social media accounts and smartphones, making them the eyes and ears of the LTO in identifying abusive motorists. Their posts on social media serve as the basis for our investigations,” he added.
Based on LTO data, a total of 1,126 SCOs have been issued since January this year and of the total, 508 were related to violations of the provisions of Republic Act 4136, the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, including operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, which is punishable by suspension or revocation of a driver’s license.
