TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental —Senatorial candidate Luis “Manong Chavit” Singson, known for transforming Ilocos Sur into one of the country’s wealthiest provinces, reaffirmed his commitment to driving economic prosperity in Mindanao during a press conference at the Asenso Global Park here.
Joined by local government officials including Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal, Ozamiz City Mayor Indy Oaminal and Tangub City Mayor Sabiniano Canama, Manong Chavit spoke passionately about his vision for Mindanao’s future. He expressed his determination to attract investments to the region and shift away from the conventional practice of hoarding wealth.
“We cannot take our money to the grave,” Singson said, emphasizing the importance of investing in the future. His words echoed with hope and urgency as he urged businessmen from urban areas to invest in the untapped potential of Mindanao.
The former governor’s success in revitalizing Ilocos Sur through strategic tourism initiatives added credibility to his vision for Mindanao. But his commitment extended beyond just words.
During the press conference, he also highlighted his support for local communities, particularly public transport organizations.
Manong Chavit, listed as No. 58 on the Senate ballot, introduced a program offering electric motorcycles at a significantly lower cost, aiming to improve the livelihood of drivers and provide them with more affordable, sustainable transportation.
“My electric vehicles are half the price of what’s available in the market. I’ve designed a loan program to make them affordable for you, the hardworking drivers, to help meet your family’s needs,” he shared, earning the applause of the transport organization members in attendance.
Singson, who is running under the slogan, “May Isang Salita,” sees his bid as an opportunity to bring lasting change to Mindanao. His proven track record in Ilocos Sur suggests he has the experience and capability to replicate his success in the region.
Drawing inspiration from successful tourism models in countries like China and South Korea, Manong Chavit stressed the importance of applying similar strategies to unlock Mindanao’s tourism potential. He also emphasized the role of diplomacy in achieving lasting peace, which he believes is crucial for attracting investors and fully capitalizing on the region’s resources.
“We need discipline and to learn from other nations. Conflicts, like the Philippine Sea dispute, only hold us back. Diplomatic negotiations and joint ventures are the way forward,” he explained.
Humorously, Singson added, “If we go to war with China, we don’t have the capacity. Diplomacy is still the best solution. Let’s focus on working together.”
Additionally, Singson pointed out the need to develop economic zones in Mindanao to attract more investments, reaffirming that Misamis Occidental would not be left behind in his plans.
“Economic zones are key to attracting investors. We must continue to push for these developments,” he said, outlining his vision for a brighter, more prosperous Mindanao.
Manong Chavit’s advocacy for progress, sustainable development, and diplomacy stands as a beacon of hope for the people of Mindanao, symbolizing a fresh approach to governance and economic growth.
