Petro Gazz bucked a lopsided opening frame setback to bring down PLDT, 12-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20, for a third straight win in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Jonah Sabete displayed her versatility with an impressive performance as a converted opposite hitter while Brooke Van Sickle and Myla Pablo maintained their smooth touch on offense to help the Angels improve to a 4-1 win-loss record.
The winger came off the bench in the first set as a reliever for Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, scoring 17 points despite an unfamiliar position.
“Actually, during training, I play as an open spiker. But they always tell me to be ready. Whatever position they want me to play I just want to deliver,” said Sabete, who saw limited minutes in the previous games and even skipped the Angels’ win over Farm Fresh in Candon, Ilocos Sur due to a strained calf injury.
Sabete was subbed in for Pontillas, who was nursing a calf injury, midway in the opening frame which saw Petro Gazz get buried early by the hot-starting High Speed Hitters.
The Angels were able to regroup right away and returned the favor in the second frame which set the tone for Petro Gazz’s four-set victory in two hours and two minutes.
“In the first set, we were having a hard time with our reception. Our communication wasn’t good. No teamwork also,” Petro Gazz’s Japanese coach Koji Tsuzurabara said.
“But in the second set, when Jonah was on the court, she changed the atmosphere.”
Already in control of the match, the Angels raced to a 15-11 lead in the fourth frame. PLDT fired back with three unanswered points before Petro Gazz ignited a 5-1 blitz to open a five-point lead, 20-15, capped by a Sabete kill.
Sabete pushed the Angels at match point, Savi Davison saved a point for PLDT, 24-20, before Pablo sealed the win with a crosscourt kill.
Van Sickle finished with 21 points built on 18 kills, two kill blocks and an ace. She added 12 digs and eight excellent receptions for an all-around performance for the Angels, who scored 62 attack points.
Pablo scored 17 of her 19 points on spikes while Remy Palma added eight. MJ Phillips played her first game after recovering from a knee injury and chipped in two points.
The High Speed Hitters dropped their second straight game in five starts.
Davison was the lone bright spot for PLDT with 28 points she collected from 26 kills, one ace and one kill block.
Erika Santos and Fiola Ceballos scored eight in the High Speed Hitters’ last game for the year.
