PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — A children's storybook to introduce young readers about the importance of Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park will be launched here next week to mark its 31st anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Tubbataha Management Office, in collaboration with the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (UNACOM), and the International Board on Books for Young People—Philippines (IBBY), will launch the storybook I Am Clowny of Tubbataha, Praying (Ako, si Klawni ng Tubbataha, Nananalangin) on 10 December in this city.

Tubbataha protected area manager Angelique Songco said Monday that the storybook aims to introduce young readers to the diverse and vibrant underwater ecosystem of the marine park through the perspective of Clowny.

Clowny is a resilient clownfish navigating the challenges that threaten his reef home.

Clowny will press environmental issues such as marine pollution and the impacts of climate change, while delivering a hopeful message about the role of collective action in safeguarding the oceans.

“Tubbataha’s story is a legacy for all humankind. Through this children’s book, we aim to inspire curiosity and love for the oceans, ensuring the values of this World Heritage Site endure for generations to come,” said Songco.

Songco stressed the importance of instilling environmental awareness in the younger generation as stewards of marine conservation.

The story follows Clowny and his friends as they confront storms and human-induced threats to their habitat.

Songco said their narrative will present the importance of hope and small actions in driving significant environmental change as they face their challenges.

The book’s creators hope it will resonate with children and foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, is one of the Philippines’ most iconic marine sanctuaries.

Spanning over 97,000 hectares, it is home to a rich diversity of marine life, including over 600 species of fish and 360 species of coral, making it a global biodiversity hotspot.

Songco stated that the anniversary event will not only highlight Tubbataha’s ecological significance but also reaffirm the collective responsibility to protect and preserve this marine treasure.

Conservation advocates, educators, and local stakeholders are expected to attend the celebration.
