Capital1 staged a stunning comeback to steal the second set before cruising in the next two to halt a three-game slide in a come-from-behind, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18, victory over Nxled the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Veteran winger Heather Guino-o and rookie Leila Cruz, the second overall pick in the first-ever Draft, powered the Solar Spikers into the win column after faltering against top contenders Chery Tiggo, Choco Mucho and PLDT.
Capital1 head coach Roger Gorayeb lauded his squad’s fighting spirit and determination to claw back from eight points down in the second frame.
“We’re down big in the secod set. Luckily, when I switched (setter) to May Macatuno the momentum shifted in our favor. (From) 20-12 down, we went up 22-20. That got us going,” he said.
Guino-o scored 21 points highlighted by 19 kills and contributed well on the defensive end with seven digs and six excellent receptions for Capital1.
Cruz submitted 17 points while Patty Orendain and Julia Ipac added 10 and eight points, respectively, for the Solar Spikers, who outgunned the Chameleons, 57-39, on attacks.
“We know that we can beat them, we just got a bit stiff. So in the second set, we just showed what we’re working on during training,” said Guino-o, who also had two kill blocks.
