It appears that Melvin Jerusalem will get another chance at becoming a world champion once again.

Jerusalem’s target is the World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight crown he once held as Puerto Rican two-belt titleholder Oscar Collazo is scheduled to go up in weight on 10 October.

The WBO has ruled that when Collazo vies for the world flyweight title, the minimumweight throne will become vacant. To fill in the vacancy, the leading contenders in the WBO’s 105-pound class will be ordered to fight for the title.

In the latest ratings, Jerusalem is listed at No. 2 behind Ryusei Marsumoto of Japan, who is No. 1.

If they agree to fight under WBO guidelines, they will proceed with a scheduled 12-round in a venue that will be determined during the negotiations.

Told about the likelihood of a clash with Matsumoto or any other contender, Jerusalem expressed excitement over the prospects of regaining the championship.

“We are getting ready for this,” Jerusalem told DAILY TRIBUNE on Saturday.

Jerusalem is coming off a heartbreaking defeat in South Africa where he surrendered the World Boxing Council plum to Siyakholwa Kuse last May.

At the earliest, Jerusalem’s title try could happen in December.
