The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), in partnership with the National Security Council and key agencies, hosted the Palawan Fisherfolk Congress in Coron on Thursday with the theme “Kaunlaran at Kapayapaan sa Kanlurang Dagat ng Pilipinas.”
The event gathered 150 fisherfolk, including indigenous Tagbanua from four Palawan municipalities, to discuss sustainable fishing practices and strengthen partnerships for peace and security in the West Philippine Sea.
BFAR spokesperson Nazario C. Briguera emphasized the importance of supporting fisherfolk as protectors of natural resources and food security, affirming the government’s commitment to their welfare.
A key highlight was the launch of BFAR’s LAYAG-WPS Project in the MIMAROPA region, aimed at enhancing fisherfolk capacity and promoting sustainable practices.
The congress also introduced BUDYONG, a web platform connecting municipal fisherfolk with the BFAR National Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council, ensuring their participation in policy-making.
In addition, fisherfolk received significant support, including fishing boats, equipment, and cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
