Robert Bachmann of squash withdrew his candidacy barely a day before the Philippine Olympic Committee holds its election of officers on Friday.

In a statement to other members of the POC general assembly, Bachman stressed that he is pulling out of the race for second vice president to give way for the candidacy of Carl Sambrano of skateboarding.

Sambrano was supposed to be running as an independent candidate but eventually joined the group of Joaquin "Chito" Loyzaga, who is challenging incumbent POC chief Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino for the POC presidency.

He will challenge Cong. Richard Gomez of modern pentathlon for the second vice presidency.

“I am pleased to inform you that Carl Sambrano has now joined TOGETHER IN EXCELLENCE, the slate headed by Joaquin “Chito” Loyzaga. The decision is my way of showing that unity is possible – even when we come from opposing sides,” Bachmann said, noting that Sambrano used to be a member of Tolentino’s inner circle before bolting out of his group.

“It is a testament to our shared commitment to serve all NSAs (national sports associations) and athletes with fairness and dedication.”

“Unity within the POC means fostering mutual respect, working collaboratively, and ensuring that administrative measures are exhausted before pursuing legal remedies.”

Aside from Sambrano, also running with Loyzaga are Rodrigo Roque of weightlifting as auditor, and Peter Miguel of fencing, Charlie Ho of netball, Myrna Yao of gymnastics and Steven Virata of equestrian as members of the executive board.
