The Commission on Elections on Wednesday announced that it has cancelled the 9 December special elections in the third district of Negros Oriental to fill the post that was left by ousted Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr.
Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia disclosed that the Comelec en banc has adopted the recommendation of its law department and House resolution seeking to postpone the special polls.
"This afternoon, the Comelec en banc adopted the recommendation of our law department, which is the House Resolution 136 calling for the conduct of special elections in the Third Legislative District of the province of Negros Oriental is deemed recalled and abandoned upon the passage of House Resolution 154," Garcia said.
The poll body chief added that Comelec has canceled the conduct of the special elections in recognition of the legislative power of Congress, Law Department, including the Comelec.
"The Law Department and the Comelec en banc decided to cancel the conduct of special elections in the Third Legislative District of the province of Negros Oriental and for the Commission to discontinue its ongoing preparation for the said special election," Garcia said.
To recall, the House passed a resolution on 7 November — the House Resolution 154 — a day before former Negros Oriental Governor Pryde Henry Teves submitted his certificate of candidacy to take up his brother's previous post.
