Participants from different units of the Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) Information and Communication Technology Management Service (ICTMS) attended a workshop on 24 October 2023 on cybersecurity, which was aimed at safeguarding the digital infrastructure and assets of the agency from potential intrusions.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Tuesday said they had taken measures to enhance their cyber defenses amid the widespread cybersecurity attacks impacting both public and private sectors throughout the Philippines.
"Our commitment to digital transformation is not just about advancement; it is also about resilience. We are fortifying our defenses, not just for us, but for every Filipino we serve," Gatchalian explained.
On 24 October, the agency invited technology partners for a workshop on DevSecOps, to be able to align with DSWD's forward-thinking "shift left" strategy that emphasizes the early integration of security measures in the software development process.
According to Assistant Secretary Julius Gorospe, the DSWD's chief information officer, the workshop is part of the activities to enhance the security of the agency's digital infrastructure and assets against potential intrusions.
"On a landscape marked by increasing cyber threats, it is imperative that we remain not just vigilant but also proactive. This is about safeguarding the welfare of DSWD beneficiaries and ensuring that the services we offer remain uninterrupted and secure," Gorospe said.
The workshop was conducted by cybersecurity and DevSecOps specialist Ben Chong with various units of the DSWD Information and Communication Technology Management Service (ICTMS) participating in the training.
"It is not just about attending a workshop; it is about imbibing a culture of security. We aim to elevate our technical competence and align ourselves with global best practices," ICTMS Director Christian Joseph Regunay pointed out.
"In the realm of cybersecurity, we believe in a collective responsibility. Whether you are a developer ensuring the security of systems or a DSWD social worker on the field, everyone plays a part in this digital tapestry," Regunay added.
The DSWD's dynamic approach towards cybersecurity is a testament to its position as a tech-progressive government agency.
"While we have made significant strides, the cybersecurity journey is long and challenging. But with our shared dedication and collective effort, we are poised to navigate this terrain with determination and expertise," the ICTMS director noted.
"At DSWD, we are not just embracing technology; we are shaping its future. And in this journey, every individual has a role to play. Together, we are building a safer, more secure digital Philippines," Gorospe said.
