The Philippine National Police said it has recorded only minor incidents during the voting period for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, and there is no reported failure of election nationwide.
In a press briefing held at Camp Crame on Monday late afternoon, Brig. Gen. Chito Bersaluna, deputy director of the PNP Directorate for Operations said that based on their initial assessment as of 3 p.m., there were some minor cases of delay in the opening of polling centers particularly in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Region 4B (Mimaropa) due to the delay in the delivery f election paraphernalia; a power interruption in Oriental Mindoro; missing voter's names and temporary suspension of the voting process due to the commotion at a polling precinct in Puerto Princesa City; and some withdrawal of teachers as board of election inspectors in Lanao Del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, Abra and Kalinga.
"The issues and concerns were immediately addressed by the Comelec through the assistance of the AFP and PCG, hence the 2023 BSKE in these areas proceeded accordingly. The conduct of the 2023 BSKE nationwide was generally peaceful as there were no major incidents recorded that compromised the integrity of the elections," Bersaluna stressed.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said that as of Monday afternoon, the number of election-related incidents for the BSKE had climbed to 35 as voters trooped to the polls, "but definitely the good thing is, some of the incidents or majority of the incidents, nakaresponde kaagad ang ating kapulisan. Napacify ang mga polling precinct and nagtuloy. So far wala pa nade-declare na areas na may failure of elections," Acorda told reporters.
During Monday's polls, the PNP reported 16 incidents: two mauling incidents in Region 9; two cases of physical injury in Region 10; one malicious mischief in Cordillera region; one harassment in Region 12; one hacking and one illegal campaigning incident in Region 4A (Calabarzon); one light threat in Region 5; one vote-buying and vote-selling in NCR; and six shooting incidents in BARMM that resulted to five killed and 11 wounded.
However,Acorda said with any significant endeavor have encountered challenges along the way but these did not affect the overall conduct of the electoral process of BSKE 2023.
But "In the face of these hurdles… our collective efforts have ensured that the integrity and fairness of the electoral process remain unscathed," said Acorda.
