Quezon tryout draws huge field

Published on

Quezon Province took the first step towards building its team as it conducted a tryout in preparation for the 2023 season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League starting 10 March.

A total of 91 participants from various parts of the province showed up to shoot for slots in the Quezon Huskers squad last Wednesday at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.

Huskers coach Eric Gonzales and assistant coach Melki Villanueva presided over the selection process with the hopes of forming a very competitive team that is co-owned by Cong. Keith Micah Tan and San Andres Mayor Ralph Lim.

Former Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Patrick Gregorio stands as team consultant while Atty. Donn Kapunan and former Ateneo de Manila University Magnum Membrere sit as team manager and assistant team manager, respectively.

Also gracing the event was MPBL head of operations Emerson Oreta, Quezon sports coordinator Aris Mercene and Quezon executive assistant Josh Carlo Villasin.

Gonzales said participants underwent drills and scrimmages to give them a closer look at their skills, abilities and tendencies inside the court, especially against stronger, seasoned foes like reigning champion Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards and heavyweights Batangas City Embassy Chill, Pampanga Giant Lanterns, and Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines.

Aside from the homegrown players, the Huskers are also looking to tap seasoned stars and collegiate standouts.
