Sen. Bong Go, on Tuesday, 6 December, expressed his unequivocal support for the fight against fake news in order to defend the truth and ensure the seamless flow of free and accurate information.
"The proliferation of even just a simple piece of false information can make a significant change to the society," said Go during a hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights tackling Senate Bill No. 1296 which criminalizes the creation and dissemination of fake news.
The measure was introduced by Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada.
Go appealed to his fellow lawmakers and other stakeholders to help in putting an end to the problem of fake news. He also enjoined them to work together and take the said issue seriously.
"It is our responsibility as a government to make sure that the people are equipped with complete and reliable information, na makakatulong po sa kanila para sa kanilang pang-araw-araw na buhay," he added.
Go then said that he will always be on the side of the truth and reiterated that spreading fake news is unfair to the people who are falsely mentioned or accused.
"Basta ako naman po'y sa katotohanan lamang, kung ano lang po yung totoo. Kawawa naman po yung mga kapwa nating Pilipino na gusto lamang mamuhay ng tahimik at yung katotohanan lamang po," concluded Go.
