Apple stem cell extract is stepping into the spotlight as one of the newest ingredients in beauty supplements, with chemist Pinky Tobiano saying plant-based technology could offer another approach to supporting skin health.

During the launch of a new beauty supplement, Tobiano said she wanted to develop a product backed by science rather than trends.

“As a chemist, before launching any product, I wouldn’t launch something that’s not innovative, something that is not scientifically proven,” she said.

Tobiano explained that the formulation was designed to address changes that naturally occur as people age, including reduced collagen production, declining skin elasticity, dehydration, and the appearance of fine lines.

She said these concerns led her to explore ingredients that support hydration, antioxidant protection, collagen production, and plant biotechnology.

The key ingredient, apple stem cell extract, is derived from cultured plant cells rather than human or animal stem cells.

“A lot of people are asking, is this human stem cell? It’s apple stem cell extract,” Tobiano clarified. “It’s inspired by the renewing power of plant cells and made with advanced plant cell culture technology. It’s not human or animal stem cells.”

According to Tobiano, apple stem cell extract was chosen because of its antioxidant properties, which work alongside reduced L-glutathione, vitamin C, hydrolyzed marine collagen, and hyaluronic acid.

She also explained why hyaluronic acid became an essential part of the formulation.

“When you take glutathione, the molecule works for the liver, but as it helps lighten the skin, it can also make the skin dry. That’s why I added hyaluronic acid — to help retain moisture while complementing glutathione,” she said.

The formulation also uses hydrolyzed marine collagen, which Tobiano said is broken down into smaller peptides for easier absorption, while vitamin C supports the body’s natural collagen production and antioxidant defense.

Tobiano emphasized that the supplement uses the active L-form of glutathione and that its ingredients were selected to complement one another rather than work independently.

As more consumers look beyond promises and become interested in the research, ingredients, and processes behind the products they use, innovation becomes not just about creating something new, but about making information and choices more accessible.
