CEBU CITY — Three members of a family, including two young boys aged 5 and 6, died after a landslide buried their home in Sitio Kandarong Riverside, Barangay Pulangbato, on Friday afternoon.
The victims were a 60-year-old grandmother, a 38-year-old mother, and the two boys, who were all living in the same house.
The mother was rescued and rushed to a hospital, while the three fatalities were confirmed as of this writing.
Rescue and extraction efforts continued but were hampered by persistent rainfall and unstable ground conditions.
South District City Councilor David Tumulak, chairperson of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said the soil continued to move because of the rain.
The landslide affected 35 families, comprising 137 individuals, prompting authorities to order nearby residents to evacuate as the hillside remained unstable.
Heavy rainfall reportedly triggered the collapse, while residents had observed signs of unstable soil on the hillside.
Authorities are conducting a technical assessment to determine the slope’s stability and whether residents can safely return to the area.
Meanwhile, the Cebu City government is bidding out a P4,996,489 slope-protection project in Sitio Kandarong, funded through the city’s supplemental budget.
