Beyond the impeachment drama, the High Court showed zero tolerance for the traditional political playbook of stretching out legal timelines.
In my observation of the last 80 years, this will be long remembered, admired, and respected.
“Okay, guys, make our day,” was my impression of what transpired so quickly, smartly.
The Supreme Court’s (SC) aggressive, rapid handling of recent high-profile political petitions has left many observers with the distinct impression that the judiciary is adopting a “make my day” stance to cut through political standoffs.
By acting with unusual speed, the High Court is signaling its refusal to let its processes be used to drag out political gamesmanship.
The Supreme Court rejects impeachment stalling tactics
The most striking example of this decisive posture is the Supreme Court’s unanimous 14-0-1 decision dismissing petitions that sought to halt or alter the rules of the ongoing impeachment proceedings.
1. The Standoff: Multiple petitions had sought a status quo ante order to freeze the trial, questioning the Senate impeachment court’s ruling on voting thresholds and its authority to convene.
2. The High Court’s Response: The Supreme Court dismissed the filings outright due to “lack of standing and prematurely.” It firmly reminded the public that the Senate has sole constitutional authority over the impeachment trial and the judiciary will not issue mandamus orders to micromanage a co-equal branch of government.
3. The Impact: House prosecutors welcomed the decision, dryly noting that the dismissed petitions were a “waste of paper” and that the trial remains firmly on track without external obstructions.
Lightning-fast deadlines to prevent delays
Beyond the impeachment drama, the High Court showed zero tolerance for the traditional political playbook of stretching out legal timelines.
1. The Five-day Ultimatum: In a separate major petition filed by election lawyer Romulo Makalintal for a temporary restraining order (TRO), the Supreme Court ordered the Office of the President, the Senate, the House, and the Comelec to submit their comments within a strict, non-extendible window of five calendar days.
The High Court’s swift, decisive orders actively cleared the way, daring political litigants to bring their best arguments without wasting the court’s time.
Let us continue with PBBM’s effort of compounding his achievements in the remaining period of his term.
Key pillars of his focused agenda
1. Education Reforms: The administration has doubled down on addressing classroom shortages, updating the curriculum, and improving teacher welfare to elevate the quality of Philippine education.
2. Digital Transformation: The government continues to prioritize the digitalization of bureaucratic processes, the expansion of internet connectivity in rural areas (such as the Bayanihan internet initiatives), and upgrading digital infrastructure to make public services more efficient and transparent.
Fulfilling Outstanding Deliverables: In his fifth State of the Nation Address, President Marcos Jr. vowed to dedicate his remaining time to completing ongoing initiatives. Focusing purely on project completion — ranging from classroom construction to rural digital infrastructure — ensuring that the administration leaves irreversible progress that future political shifts cannot dismantle.
A presidency’s true endurance is reflected in the stability of its institutions and the concrete improvements in citizens’ lives. For the remainder of his term, delivering on the promise of an educated and digitally empowered country remains the most potent defense against political volatility.
