Metropolitan and transport authorities are pushing for stricter enforcement against road obstructions after a responding fire truck collided with a double-parked sedan along a narrow street in Makati City on Saturday.

The incident gained traction after a video circulated online showing a Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) truck struggling to navigate a cramped section of Macabulos Street in Barangay Bangkal.

The truck scraped against a double-parked black Hyundai Elantra sedan as firefighters attempted to reach an active fire.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Special Operations Group–Strike Force chief Gabriel Go cited the event as proof of the need for ongoing street clearing and public cooperation.

"That is when you see why our road clearing efforts are so important," Go said in a statement, highlighting double parking, illegal structures on sidewalks and abandoned items as critical threats to emergency response times.

Following the incident, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a show-cause order on Sunday against the driver and registered owner of the sedan for illegal parking and obstruction of traffic.

The LTO ordered the driver to immediately surrender his driver's license, placing it under a 90-day preventive suspension while the investigation is underway. The agency also placed the vehicle under alarm status, which prevents its registration and transfer of ownership.

"Every second counts for our firefighters," LTO chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said. "Violations or negligence on the road should never cause delays in their emergency response."

The driver and owner were directed to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division on 18 September to submit sworn statements and supporting documents.

The agency noted that the driver's license could be permanently revoked if he is determined to be an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.
