Misamis Occidental poverty rate sees sharp drop from 30% to 11% - PSA

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL— Poverty incidence in Misamis Occidental dropped to 11.2 percent in 2025 from 30.2 percent in 2023, according to data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

The 19 percentage point decrease coincides with regional economic expansion under Governor Henry S. Oaminal. Oaminal credited the decline to coordinated programs between provincial officials, congressional representatives, and local government units focused on livelihood support and public services.

The provincial administration operates under its 5Ms development framework, known as "Misamisnon Magpuyong Malinawon, Malambuon, ug Malipayon" or Misamisnons living peacefully, progressively, and happily serves as the central development thrust of the provincial government. which focuses on community stability and economic improvement. Oaminal noted that the framework aims to assist families with education, security, and living standards.

Alongside the poverty reduction, Misamis Occidental recorded a 7.5 % economic growth rate in 2024, higher than the 6 % average recorded across Northern Mindanao. Total economic output for the province rose from P127.21 billion in 2023 to P136.77 billion in 2024, driven primarily by the services and industry sectors.

National economic metrics placed Misamis Occidental fifth in per capita gross domestic product, eighth in local source income growth, 14th in overall growth rate, and 15th among progressive provinces. It also ranked ninth among the largest provincial economies in Mindanao.

Oaminal emphasized that economic indicators are evaluated based on direct impacts on employment, household income, and access to basic services. To address remaining service gaps, the provincial government hosted its first Provincial Anti-Poverty Summit earlier this year to align local and national budgets and programs.

“Our goal is very clear: to help more Misamisnon families improve their quality of life, keep their children in school, and give them the opportunity to live peacefully, progressively, and happily. That is what our 5Ms vision is all about,” Oaminal said.

The provincial government plans to maintain joint operations with national agencies, municipal authorities, private enterprises, and local communities to sustain economic growth across the region.

For the Oaminal administration, however, the latest figures are not simply indicators of economic performance but a measure of whether growth is translating into better opportunities for ordinary Misamisnons. “The real measure of development is not simply how much our economy grows, but how many families are able to feel that growth in their daily lives. We want stronger businesses and investments to mean more jobs, higher incomes, better education for our children, and greater opportunities for every Misamisnon,” Oaminal said.
