Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Wednesday reiterated the force’s zero-tolerance policy against indiscriminate firing, warning that offenders could be dismissed from service.

Nartatez directed police personnel to exercise discipline and professionalism when handling firearms.

“Our badge should not be used as an escape to do things irresponsibly. This will not save us from being accountable for our wrong actions,” Nartatez said.

He said police officers were expected to uphold the law, use their authority responsibly and protect the communities they served.

“As law enforcers, we should always take the lead in following the law and other rules and regulations, especially on responsible gun ownership,” he added.

Nartatez issued the warning after a police officer assigned to Valenzuela City allegedly fired a gun in a residential area in Marilao, Bulacan, last week.

No injuries were reported. The officer was taken into police custody and charged with illegal discharge of a firearm.

Nartatez said the officer would also face administrative charges.

The PNP implements a one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing. Police officers found responsible may face sanctions, including dismissal.

“I am reminding all our personnel to observe the highest level of discipline and professionalism when it comes to handling firearms,” Nartatez said.

He also ordered police chiefs and unit commanders to act immediately on complaints involving indiscriminate firing.

“Let us not abuse our power and authority. The PNP is firmly committed to protecting lives and ensuring public safety at all times,” he said.
