Held on 26 August at the SMX Convention Center, the DTI–Bagong Pilipinas COCONUT Philippines Trade Fair served as both a vital showcase of economic resilience and a sophisticated blueprint for modern industrial strategy.
By bringing together nearly 300 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the event moved beyond a mere commercial exhibition to signal a structural shift in how the nation leverages its agricultural heritage.
Organized by the DTI-Bureau of Market Development, Promotions and OTOP in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority, the fair proved that the future of the local coconut sector lies in moving up the value chain.
A vibrant display of high-value food innovations, natural wellness products, therapeutic skincare and eco-friendly furniture demonstrated that this traditional commodity sector can evolve into a sophisticated, high-growth engine through creative processing and design.
DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque framed this transition clearly during her keynote address, challenging the industry to look beyond raw harvesting and toward global market integration. Her emphasis on branding, packaging and robust distribution networks highlighted a critical truth: the true wealth of the coconut industry is unlocked through manufacturing sophistication rather than sheer agricultural yield.
Backed by an ambitious P1 billion sales goal, this strategic vision turned the event into a crucial testing ground for domestic “cocopreneurs” eyeing international export markets. Ultimately, the trade fair serves as an encouraging model for national development, proving that targeted government support can successfully elevate grassroots enterprises into competitive global players.
